When it comes to air travel, Paris boasts several airports that cater to a diverse range of flights and travelers. Each airport has its own unique features and serves different purposes, making it important to understand their distinctions. Here is a closer look at the main airports serving Paris:

Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG)

As France’s main international gateway, Charles de Gaulle Airport is one of the busiest airports in Europe. Situated approximately 25 kilometers northeast of Paris, it offers extensive connections to destinations worldwide. With its multiple terminals, CDG accommodates a wide range of airlines, including major carriers and international alliances. Its exceptional facilities, amenities, and services ensure a smooth and comfortable travel experience for passengers.

Located approximately 13 kilometers south of Paris, Orly Airport serves as a convenient hub for domestic and European flights. It provides a more compact and accessible alternative to Charles de Gaulle Airport. Orly Airport primarily handles scheduled flights to various destinations within France, as well as Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. It offers modern terminals, efficient services, and a wide range of amenities to cater to the needs of travelers.

Navigating Your Way from Airports to the City Center

When embarking on a journey to a new city, one of the first challenges is figuring out how to get from the airport to the city center. In this blog post, we will explore various transportation options for three major airports, namely Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Orly, and Beauvais-Tillé. By familiarizing yourself with these options, you can choose the most convenient and cost-effective means of reaching your destination.

CDG (Charles de Gaulle) to City Center

International terminals are located in Terminals 1 and 2, and low-cost flights companies are in Terminal 3. These terminals are connected by a FREE bus to connect from one terminal to another.

  1. RER Train: The RER (Réseau Express Régional) train is an efficient and affordable mode of transportation. The RER B line connects CDG to major city hubs such as Gare du Nord, Châtelet-Les Halles, and Saint-Michel. Passengers can purchase tickets at the airport and follow clear signage to the train station.
  2. Airport Shuttles: Numerous shuttle services operate between CDG and the city center. These shuttles provide direct transportation to major hotels and popular landmarks, offering convenience and comfort at a reasonable price.
The RoissyBus shuttle provides a direct link between Paris (Paris-Opéra in 60 minutes) and Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport.
    Journey time: approx. 60 minutes.
Tariffs: €16.20 (forfait Navigo, zones 1-5 accepted)
    RoissyBus stops at Paris-CDG airport: Terminal 1 – Terminal 3 – Terminal 2AC – Terminal 2D – Terminal 2EF.
RoissyBus stops at Paris: Paris-Opéra (Corner of “rue Scribe” and “rue Auber”).
Frequency: RATP ensures 1 departure out of 2 with a maximum interval of 30 minutes.
  3. Taxis: Taxis are readily available outside the airport terminals and provide a convenient door-to-door service. While taxis are more expensive compared to other options, they can be a viable choice if you have heavy luggage or prefer a direct transfer to your accommodation.
Do note that the cost can go beyond €50 and includes an additional 15% surcharge on Sundays and holidays from 7.00pm to 10.00 am.

ORY (Orly) to City Center

  1. Orlyval Train: The Orlyval train is a dedicated airport shuttle that connects Orly Airport to the RER B line at Antony station. From Antony, passengers can transfer to the RER B and reach various destinations in Paris. The Orlyval train is a swift and hassle-free way to travel. Harris took the Orlyval once in 2012, it was ages ago, but as I recalled it was very convenient.
  2. Orlybus: Another affordable option is the Orlybus, a dedicated bus service connecting Orly Airport to Denfert-Rochereau station in the city center. This bus service operates frequently, allowing passengers to travel comfortably and conveniently.
  3. Private Transfers: If you prefer a more personalized experience, private transfer services are available at Orly Airport. These services offer the convenience of door-to-door transportation and can be pre-booked to ensure a smooth journey.

BVA (Beauvais-Tillé) to City Center

It is located approximately 85 kilometers north of Paris, is mainly served by low-cost airlines. As ‘ve mentioned before, it’s a ‘functional budget friendly airport’. Although it is farther from the city center, several transportation options are available:

  1. Shuttle Services: Various shuttle services operate between Beauvais-Tillé Airport and the city center. These shuttles provide regular transfers, with departures scheduled to match flight arrivals, making them a convenient option.
  2. Buses: Public buses, such as the Beauvais Airport Shuttle, connect the airport to major transportation hubs in Paris, including Porte Maillot and Pershing Parking. Buses offer an affordable way to reach the city center, albeit with longer travel times compared to other modes of transport.
  3. Alternative Transportation Methods: Some travelers may prefer alternative transportation methods such as car rentals or ridesharing services. While these options provide more flexibility, it is essential to consider factors like traffic conditions and parking availability.

The Bottom Line

Navigating from the airport to the city center can be a straightforward and stress-free experience if you are aware of the available transportation options. Whether you choose the RER train, airport shuttles, taxis, Orlyval, Orlybus, private transfers, shuttle services, buses, or alternative methods, each option has its advantages depending on your budget and preferences.

Whichever mode of transport you may choose, it would be well worth the time and effort!
